History:
Once part of the vast Caruth Family Homestead and land empire of the 19th & 20th centuries, Vickery Place was purchased for development by G.W. Works in 1913. At the time, Mr. Works was the manager of the Dallas Street Railway Company. He advertised, on the back of railway tickets, his new development north of Downtown as: “Above the city — It’s natural advantages together with modern improvements and conveniences, make it most desirable for home or investment purposes.” Vickery Place was to be 35 blocks, with the larger homes platted and built first; followed by the smaller, less-expensive homes filled in. This was a time before institutional mortgages. G.W. Works financed his new buyers in Vickery Place at $10-down, and $10 per month. What was the sales price? $850. Roughly $21,000 in 2019. Much has changed since 1913! Vickery Place is one of three neighborhoods that makes up “M-Streets”.
Feel:
Folks who live in Vickery are mostly young professionals, young-married-couples and young families who enjoy being extremely close to an urban environment; but still like the essence and organization of a suburb. Being one of (if not the) oldest neighborhoods in Dallas, Preservation Dallas protects Vickery Place and M-Streets from losing its rich character and charm. If you enjoy history, niche, walkability, community and urban proximity, you’re just like almost 4,000 people who call Vickery Place home.
